STEM Superstars: 'Teacher Flight' aims to launch aviation careers

'Teacher Flight' aims to launch aviation careers. 9NEWS.com

KUSA - The Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum Teacher Flight Program has a lofty goal: to provide a flight experience for a teacher from every school in Colorado by the year 2020. The goal of flying over fifteen hundred educators is tied to helping teachers bring excitement and enthusiasm around aerospace and aviation into the classroom. Creators of the Teacher Flight program believe that educators and students, "can be inspired to higher achievement through the motivational context of flight."

Hetty Carlson runs the Teacher Flight program from Centennial Airport and says that some educators begin with an extreme fear of flight and come out with a feeling of accomplishment, knowing that they challenged themselves to see the world through new eyes. This excitement is what Wings hopes the teachers take back to the classroom.

Teacher Flight participants receive a flight in a WWII Stearman Biplane with a high time qualified pilot, as well as a complimentary, lifetime Family Membership to Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, an official certificate recognizing a status as a Teacher Envoy, a link to a GoPro video of the teacher's flight, a Teacher Envoy Resource Directory including information on aviation/aerospace programs, curriculum and career opportunities, internships, and scholarships, a list of Wings representatives/guest speakers who can be scheduled to visit schools, and a free, one-time admission Boarding Pass for every student in your school to the Wings Museum.

Each teacher who participates also has the option to serve as the official Wings Museum ambassador for the entire student body of their school, make one-on-one and group presentations to students on the resources and attractions of the Museum, distribute free-admission Museum passes to encourage student visits, attend periodic Teacher Envoy meetings or events, and provide information on educational and career opportunities in aviation/aerospace.
