Think again before buying that EpiPen on Craigslist

DENVER - People are selling EpiPens on Craigslist in Denver.

9News found four separate ads -- one for an EpiPen Jr., two for two-packs of EpiPens, and even one for an expired EpiPen.

The post about the (free!) expired EpiPen was courteous enough to add: "I googled it and it says they (might) still be fine."

It should be noted that it's illegal to buy or sell prescription medications unless it's through a licensed pharmacy.

Outside of the legality of the exchange, there also a safety issue.

"There may be a safety concern where the EpiPen may not contain epinephrine -- the medication used for allergic response -- and we may have a contaminated product since it's being sold without a valid legal prescription," Joseph Saseen said, PharmD at the CU Skaggs School of Pharmacy

Recent price increases for the life-saving drug has ignited a media firestorm in the past two weeks.

Mylan announced plans to release a generic version of the EpiPen for $300 this week and offers a $300 coupon for those with insurance to help cover the out-of-pocket costs of EpiPen.
