This is the healthiest way to drink coffee

Dr. Rachel Yan joined us on 9NEWS Mornings to talk about a healthy way to drink coffee.

KUSA - Coffee is an important daily ritual for a lot of us, especially on Monday mornings. In fact, surveys show that 83 percent of U.S. adults drink coffee at an average of three cups per person, per day.

Caffeine is an addictive drug. Although its effects are milder, caffeine operates using the same brain pathways as amphetamines, cocaine, and heroin. If you feel like you cannot function without it and have to drink it every day, you’re probably addicted to caffeine.

Q: What’s the best way to drink coffee?

An 8 oz coffee has up to 200mg of caffeine. We know that caffeine has a half life of six hours, which means if you drink that coffee at 3 p.m., by 9 p.m. you still have 100mg of caffeine in your system. Even if you can fall asleep, you probably won’t be hitting truly deep and restful sleep you would have gotten without the caffeine. So my first advice is to only drink coffee in the morning.

Q: Can you tell us about the new butter coffee hype?

Everyone has been trying the new butter coffee hype. The idea here is to blend some healthy fats into your coffee because we know fats help stabilize your blood sugar and provide long burning fuel to your body and brain. Here’s how it works:

-8 oz hot coffee

-1/2 Tbsp grassfed butter

-1/2 Tbsp coconut oil

-blend

My last piece of advice is to never replace breakfast with coffee. When you start using coffee like this, you’re using like a drug to replace essential nutrients first thing in the morning.
