3 injured after semi crash buries car in sand

BOULDER - A semi-truck hauling sand lost control and flipped over on its side, dumping its load on nearby cars in Boulder Friday evening. The sand from the truck completely buried one vehicle, trapping its driver inside the SUV.

Police say people brought shovels, buckets and dug with their hands to get to the driver trapped inside the buried car. Fire crews cut the roof and door off the car and rescued the driver. Firefighters laid on top of car and talked to driver during the rescue.

Three people, including the truck driver, were transported to the hospital for unknown injuries. The crash happened near Foothills Parkway and Baseline Road in Boulder.

Other cars crashed behind them in a chain reaction.

Baseline Road east of Foothills Parkway will be shut down until the cars and sand are removed and diesel fuel cleaned up.

The investigation into what caused the truck driver to lose control continues.
