SIMLA – An Eastern Plains community is mourning the loss of a 7th grader who died after collapsing at a basketball game Thursday night.

Wesley Maranville, a student at Big Sandy Schools in Simla, was just 12 years old.

"Wesley was just a neat young man," Big Sandy School District Superintendent Steve Wilson told KOAA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Colorado Springs.

The cause of Maranville's death is unknown. Wilson said a doctor tried to help him immediately after he passed out, and that two EMTs rushed to the scene.

His death was a blow to the tiny school district, which is home to only 301 pre-K through 12th grade students.

Classes were canceled on Friday in wake of the devastating loss, and they're set to resume on Monday.

"Wesley was a top-shelf student and a great community member," Wilson said.

Funeral arrangements for Maranville has not yet been released.
