Apartment explosion awakens residents

DENVER – An explosion and fire awakened residents of the French Quarter at Nine Mile Station apartments Sunday morning.

The explosion happened in a free-standing gazebo, that used to house mailboxes, according to Mark Watson, a spokesperson for the Denver Fire Department.

The building involved in the explosion, at 3235 South Parker Road, and the adjacent apartment buildings were evacuated after the explosion was reported around 7 a.m. according to Mark Watson, a spokesperson for the Denver Fire Department.

Watson said no injuries were reported.

Watson said the fire was contained to one part of the building.

After the fire was extinguished the building was declared structurally sound, and it was determined that there is no danger of the building or surrounding structures collapsing, Watson said

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

The gas to the building involved in the explosion has been turned off and Xcel Energy has been notified of the incident, according to Watson.
