Armed suspect detained in Evans

EVANS - One person is in custody following a confrontation in Evans overnight.

Just after midnight, officers from the Evans Police Department responded to the Rodeway Inn to arrest a man on a warrant out of Kansas for burglary and possession of methamphetamine.

Officers went to the room and found a man armed with a gun in his hand.  He was identified as 28-year-old David Blanco.

Police say Blanco raised his gun, pointing it at the officers. One of the Evans officers fired his weapon in response.

Blanco retreated to a bathroom, barricading himself inside. He was not hit by the bullet.

During the barricade, four children and a woman were safely removed from the motel room.

Weld County SWAT responded to the incident and deployed tear gas.

Blanco was taken into custody and treated for minor injuries due to the tear gas. The officer that fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave as normal protocol.

If anyone has any information about the incident, contact Detective Kyle Peltz with the Greeley Police Department at 970-351-5350.
