Carroll, who will begin his fourth term in the Colorado House of Representatives in January, was selected Speaker of the House by the Democratic caucus in November.

Pending election by the full house in January, he will be the first African American to hold the position in Colorado.

The more than 900 graduating candidates at Metro State represent a 5.6 percent increase over fall 2007.

More than 20 percent of the graduate candidates are students of color.

Carroll has chaired the Metro State caucus of the legislature since it was formed in 2006.

The commencement ceremony will be held at the Colorado Convention Center on Sunday Dec. 14 at 2 p.m.
