Angel Food Ministries offers low cost food for the hungry

KUSA - A non-profit group is offering Colorado families a low cost way to keep food on the table during these tough economic times.

Angel Food Ministries is selling food boxes, filled with meat, vegetables, eggs, and much more for $30. JoAnne Metcalf, the minister of outreach for the non profit says the box can feed a family of four for about a week and a single senior for a month and it's quite a deal.

"When we've gone and compared it with local grocers it's been as high as $78 for the same exact items," she said.

The food is all the same high quality one would purchase at a grocery store and families can also add on special boxes with steak and other meats for an additional price.

Angel Food Ministries started in 1994 in Georgia. Now the organization has sites in 36 states, including several in Colorado, which allows the group to buy food at prices you can't find in the store.

"Because of the volume buying, we're able to negotiate the prices from the manufacturers so we can pass on the savings to the consumers," said Metcalf.

Unlike food pantries that offer emergency boxes for families in need, there are no applications to fill out or requirements to meet. The program is open to anyone, regardless of their income level or situation.  The goal, however, is helping families that are in crisis to become self-sufficent.

Angel Food Ministries usually serves about 500,000 families each month, but the number has been growing because of the downturn.

"With the economy the way it is we have seen a marked increase across the nation, so it's a blessing to be available to help people get through the crunch," Metcalf said.

Food is distributed by the group once a month. If you're interested in signing up, CLICK HERE.
