AURORA - Police say preliminary ballistic reports show that it was an officer's bullet that shot a suspect in the head.

When Aurora Police first released information about the shooting on Saturday night, they said the suspect may have shot himself.

His family says his name is Darius Murray. He is 18 years old. He is in critical condition at the University of Colorado Hospital.

Murray's family wants police to explain what they call "inconsistencies" in the story.

"The story seems to be changing and we want to know why. We have a lot of questions about what really happened that night," the family's lawyer, Derek Cole, said

Saturday night, police say they were called out on an attempted burglary near East 19th Avenue and Clinton Street. The officers say when they tried to stop to question Murray, he fired his gun at them multiple times. Police say the two officers fired back and hit him in the leg, shoulder and head.

The Murray family says Darius didn't come home over the weekend and that isn't like him. They say they knew something was wrong. They started asking his friends and looking for him.

Murray's mom, Crystal Yelverton, says she went to the police department and to area hospitals. She says she is furious that police never contacted the family to let them know what happened.

"For two days I had no idea if he was dead or alive," Yelverton said

"The mother tried to locate her son for two days. She spoke to Aurora Police and they would not confirm his identity would not give her any information at the time so we have an issue with the way that was handled especially from a department that is supposed to help us also," Lanea Bynum, Darius Murray's aunt, said

"We work with our advocates and we work as quickly as possible to notify any family members. This was a complicated case because the injured party was also a suspect in an attempted homicide investigation," Det. Robert Friel with Aurora Police said

Murray faces attempted homicide charges for firing shots at the officers. Police say they recovered his gun at the scene. Investigators say he shot first and shot "multiple times."

Murray's family is asking anyone with information about that night to come forward. They say they don't feel confident they are getting all the information or the correct information.

Bynum said, "We would like to know the truth of what happened. Whatever that truth is we just want to know and we don't think police should investigate police."
