Hungry dog finds hunters

DENVER - On their annual, week-long hunting trip, three friends made a surprising discovery and may have saved 6 lives.

Eddie, Kevin and Paul were camping in the White River National Forest near Glenwood Springs when they heard a dog barking.

Since this hunting camp was far away from any homes or roads, the group assumed that other hunters had brought the dog with them into the forest.

Later, the dog wandered into their campsite. Seeing that she was very thin, the hunters fed her some of their leftover dinner. While she wandered off back into the woods, the hunters worried about her and assumed she might have been abandoned.

Later in their trip, the dog, whom the hunters named Remy, came back and led the hunters to her den in the woods. Under a fallen tree were five, plump, squirming puppies.

Even though they didn't shoot any Elk, Ed Cray said this was a perfect hunting trip.

"We want to get our animals, and that's why we go," Cray said. "But, filling tags couldn't have been any better. I mean, this was a pretty cool feeling."

The hunters brought all 6 dogs back to Denver where a vet said they might have been rescued just in time. While the puppies are all healthy, their mother, Remy, was extremely thin and dehydrated.

"This made it all worthwhile," Cray said. "It was a pretty amazing trip."

None of the dogs have identification chips, so Cray is planning to keep Remy and find good homes for the puppies.
