Turkey donation makes history for Denver Rescue Mission

DENVER - The Denver Rescue Mission has received the largest turkey donation in its history.

9NEWS reported last week that the Rescue Mission was facing a turkey shortage just weeks before its annual Thanksgiving Day dinners for the homeless.

Southwest Airlines stepped up to the plate and donated more than 4,000 turkeys to help feed the poor and homeless this holiday season in the Denver area.

The turkeys along with other donations will be served beginning Nov. 25 during the annual Great Thanksgiving Banquet hosted by Governor Bill Ritter.

Southwest Airlines employees from Denver will also volunteer their time at the event.

Brad Meuli, president and CEO of the Denver Rescue Mission stated in a press release, "When Southwest Airlines says they care about Denver, they're not talking turkey. We are extremely grateful for the significant commitment of cash and volunteer time from Southwest Employees, just when we needed it most."
