WESTMINSTER - Police believe road rage may have been a factor in a shooting that happened in the middle of an intersection on Friday night.

"There was some type of interaction between these two vehicles before they reached Huron for us to believe that road rage or some other type of event similar to road rage occurred prior to the shooting," said Trevor Materasso, investigator with Westminster Police.

Westminster Police say the shooting happened between two vehicles at the intersection of West 120th Avenue and Huron Street. Both vehicles were traveling east on 120th Avenue as they approached Huron Street according to investigators.

Police say a man was shot around 7:45 p.m. Investigators say the victim was able to exit his car and get help from bystanders in a nearby parking lot.

Police say he was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries. His name was not released.

Police arrested Travis Neil Smith for the shooting. He was booked into the Adams County Jail on First Degree Murder charges after initially leaving the scene.

"By airing the information to other local police departments, the Commerce City Police were able to locate that vehicle in Commerce City," said Materasso.

Police say tragedies like this can be avoided. Even if someone upsets you on the road, Materasso says let it go.

"We just suggest to people, it's not worth it," said Materasso.
