CSU dorm evacuated after man threatens to jump from roof
|
FORT COLLINS (AP) - About 100 students were evacuated from a Colorado State University dormitory Wednesday after an unarmed man with a criminal record climbed to the roof of the three-story building and threatened to jump. ![]() The man surrendered and was arrested after about two hours, university officials said. No injuries were reported. The incident occurred two days after a gunman killed 32 people and took his own life on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va., but Colorado State spokesman Brad Bohlander said it was unclear whether the two events were related. "We don't have any motive at this point in time. Of course, the police will be doing their interviews and trying to determine that," he said. Colorado State officials identified the man arrested on the roof of Edwards Hall as Charles Holland, 33, and said he "has been known by police to be armed and dangerous in the past." Holland has an arrest history including charges of kidnapping, assault, menacing, harassment, robbery and burglary, school officials said. They say Holland lives in Fort Collins but is not a Colorado State student. Officials say Holland was spotted on the roof at about 4 a.m. and police arrived two minutes later. Officers determined he was unarmed, but because of Holland's history, the students were evacuated. Edwards Hall and two nearby dorms were locked down and entrances to the campus were blocked, university officials said. School administrators said at the time Holland surrendered at 6:15 a.m., they were also preparing to alert others on campus before students arrived for classes. Holland was being held for investigation of second-degree criminal trespass. He also faces outstanding warrants accusing him of domestic violence, violating a protection order and violating bond conditions, university officials said. The evacuated students were allowed to return to their rooms at 6:40 a.m. Bohlander said a vigil for the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre would go on as scheduled later Wednesday.
