GRAND JUNCTION (AP) - A California-based nonprofit is offering a $2,500 reward for information that leads to the killer of a dog in Fruita.

Walt Speirs and Julie Sinnott watched from a distance as someone ran over their dog, Chaco, on June 2. It happened on the dusty Highline Canal Road behind their home.

The canal road is government property. The couple says the vehicle that hit Chaco was traveling so fast, they couldn't get the license number, especially in a cloud of dust.

However, they did get a look at the vehicle: a gray or silver Chevy Avalanche-type truck with checkered flags in the back window.

The international animal advocacy group In Defense of Animals is pleading for anyone with information to contact the couple.

Speirs says he simply wants an apology.

Speirs and Sinnott can be reached at 970-858-7950.
