Teenager killed in crash; police seek other driver
|
WESTMINSTER - Police say a teenage driver died Friday night after possibly racing another driver. ![]() Westminster Police Spokesperson Stephanie Topkoff says Matthew Herrera was heading west on West 92nd Avenue in a silver Sebring around 11:45 p.m., possibly racing another driver, when he lost control. "The Sebring lost control at about Meade Street, went sideways and slid for about a block," said Topkoff. Topkoff says that's when Herrera collided with a Yukon. Herrera was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Yukon was taken to North Suburban Hospital, where he was treated and released. His name was not immediately released although we are told he is 24 years old. Herrera's mother tells 9NEWS Herrera was an 18-year-old graduate of Lifeskills Academy in Denver. Herrera's family disputes any claims that Matthew was street racing. Topkoff says 92nd Avenue is a popular street for racing, especially for young drivers. "We don't want anybody out there drag racing, just racing up and down the roadway. It's very dangerous. We do usually see an increase in accidents throughout the state of Colorado," said Topkoff. Westminster Police are looking for the motorist that may have been racing Herrera. The driver's vehicle is described as a white sedan. Anyone with information is asked to call the Westminster Police Department at 303-430-2400 ext. 5. (Copyright KUSA*TV, All Rights Reserved)
