The Federal Center was awarded $120 million through The Recovery Act to invest in renewable energy and is now in the final stages of completing its solar panel project.
The panels will help lower temperatures in the building by up to 30 degrees, but it's not just about saving on energy costs.
"It improves our air quality. It improves our water quality because we're working on water systems as well as air and it lowers the cost of operating our buildings," Sue Damour, regional administrator for General Services Administration, said.
The Federal Center has set a goal of being the greenest campus in the U.S. by 2020.
