DENVER - Venus De Miles, Colorado's only women's biking event, is set to start Aug. 28.
The bike ride supports Greenhouse Scholars, which is a nonprofit dedicated to helping high-performing, under-resourced high school seniors succeed in college.
"We offer support all through their four years of college," event director Teresa Robbins said. "We offer mentorship support, internship [and] peer-to-peer. [We are] really culminating the next generation of community leaders."
Currently, there are over 50 scholars in the program.
"The idea that they will be creating change within their communities is something that we are very passionate about," Robbins said.
Funds from the Venus De Miles go to support the Greenhouse Scholars.
The Venus De Miles is open to all skill levels, and registration is underway.
There are four course options available for the event, each starting at Prospect Park in Longmont. There are 33-mile, 51-mile, 67-mile and a 100 mile rides.
The Venus De Miles has many features that a regular bike race may not have.
"Venus De Miles is probably the only event in the nation where, when you finish, you can actually get a mojito and gourmet food. You can [also] get a massage and a mini facial," Robbins said.
Even though the event is for women, some men will be allowed.
"We have a small group of 25 men that dress in drag that provide mechanical support to our riders. Not that we need it, but they support the women by changing flats and fixing different mechanical issues," Robbins said.
