The sign was created by the Boulder Atheists. We've been around since 2001 and do what we can to support separation of church and state.

DENVER - Billboards are popping up around Colorado that are making some people laugh while others are outraged.

The Boulder Atheists have created three billboards - two in Denver and one in Colorado Springs -  they hope to emphasize the separation of church and state.

The billboard reads "God is an imaginary friend. Choose reality, it will be better for all of us." Below the main message, it attributes the sentiment to the Colorado Coalition of Reason.

The organization did not return 9NEWS' calls for comment, but on their website, they say part of the reason is their concern with religious people they say who feel they are obligated to force their religious views on others.

On the website also, they ask those who disagree with the billboard's message not to be offended, saying "If you disagree with the sentiments of the sign, please don't be offended. We are more interested in opening a dialogue than upsetting you. We don't ask you to stop believing in your version of a super-natural being."
