9NEWS spoke with Tom Gleason of Forest City Stapleton, the developer that is moving forward with this second phase, which will include both commercial and residential additions.

"We are at least five to ten years away from completing residential development that's been projected somewhere in the range of 12,000 homes and apartments," Gleason explained.

He said the ultimate vision of the expansion may not be just a place to call home but a better and more accommodating work/home life for Denverites. "A lot of this translates into creating the quality of life that employers are looking for to get the best employees," he noted.

Gleason said the Stapleton Phase II expansion goal includes being a key part of Mayor Hancock's vision for a DIA-based Aerotropolis, a 21st century airport linked with speedy global connections that will boost the regional economy and make Denver an international destination.
