Gov. John Hickenlooper issued an executive order last week banning the private use of fireworks, but he said municipal fireworks displays could go on if a local sheriff approves.
City Fire Chief Mel Stewart told the Steamboat Pilot & Today on Monday that the city doesn't want to risk ending up with a fire.
The last time Steamboat's July 4 fireworks show was cancelled was in 2002, when similar dry conditions existed.
