Police checked IDs and escorted residents back to their units Wednesday evening. 

Their three-story brick building was evacuated Friday, hours after the theater shooting that killed 12 and wounded 58.

Investigators said Holmes had rigged his entire apartment with a complex series of booby traps that took authorities days to dismantle.

Some people ducked under yellow crime scene tape flanking the building, carrying shopping bags stuffed with groceries.

"It's nice to be home!" A resident told 9NEWS Reporter Meagan Fitzgerald.

Repair crews are on scene boarding up broken windows and working on repairing the back door which is completely off.

Police say they no longer consider the building a crime scene.
