The Craig Fire Department says the man was using a propane torch to repair a line near the tank when the explosion occurred.
The tank flew 50 feet in the air and landed on a nearby tanker truck. Fire officials say other workers in the area were not injured.
The fire was contained more than three hours after the explosion.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
