"He's the most vocal person at practice every day," senior Demetrius Miller said. "He makes sure of that."
Clark has spent most of his coaching career in the gym at Metro State. For eight years, he served as an assistant under then-head coach Mike Dunlap, the winningest coach in Metro State history. Dunlap's teams won the national championship twice and made three other trips to the Elite Eight. He also assisted Jeff Bzdelik during his time at Air Force and CU.
"I played for Mike Dunlap in college, so literally, half my life has been around Mike Dunlap," Clark said. "That speaks volumes right there."
These days, he's entering his third season as the head guy at Metro State, which is a little different.
"The obvious one, you don't get a break, it's on you 24/7," Clark said. "When you go home and it's 10 or 11 at night, you have your cellphone right there, just in case you have to deal with something. The other thing is your growth is accelerated as a head coach because you have to figure things out every day. You can't pass along to an assistant."
By taking bits and pieces from Dunlap and Bzdelik, and adding in his own "spice," Coach Clark has brought the Roadrunners back into the Division 2 national spotlight. Through 13 games, they are undefeated and ranked #2 in the country.
"When I left this environment, I was with Coach Bzdelik at Air Force [and we had] success," explains Clark. "So I left success, we had success. Then we took the CU job, and I went to coach there and we didn't have a lot of success. So to me it's about appreciation in the environment and not taking winning for granted."
"He demands perfection and excellence and doesn't let you slack off," explains Miller. "He wants to get the best out of you at all times and with a coach you want that. You don't want a coach that just let's you go by, you want a coach that's on you a lot and demands excellence."
Metro State will host No. 13 Adams State on Friday and No. 17 Fort Lewis on Saturday. For more information, visit gometrostate.com
