Not since 1975, when seven officers were killed, have so officers many been lost in a single year.
Those lost in the line of duty serves as the inspiration behind the documentary "Heroes Behind the Badge."
"The film's a powerful portrayal of some of the sacrifices that go on in law enforcement," Bill Erfurth, executive producer of the film and retired Miami Dade Police lieutenant, said.
The documentary focuses on the death of four police officers and how it affected their families, colleagues and communities.
The making of the film was touch at time, according to Erfurth.
"Sitting with the family members, the teenage children and having them recount on camera probably the worst days of their lives when they lost their loved ones," he said.
Erfurth also experienced this loss during his career.
"My first five years in Miami, I lost four personal friends in the line of duty, and it was something that never left me in my 26-year career," he said.
The film will be shown Thursday night at the Wildlife Experience in Parker. It will be the first of six screenings across the state.
All of the proceeds will go to the National Police Memorial Fund and the Police Unity Tour.
