SAN JUAN COUNTY - Skiers triggered the slide that killed one of them and injured another.
Melody Skinner, with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office said her office was notified of the avalanche just before 3 p.m. on Saturday.
She said three people skiing the backcountry outside of the Silverton Mountain area triggered an avalanche in the southwestern part of the state, off county road 10 near Gladstone.
Peter James Carver, a 23-year-old from Durango, did not survive. John Duncan Rothwell, 23, also from Durango, was taken to Mercy Hospital. His condition was unknown as of Saturday night.
A third Durango man, Nathaniel Klema, 23, was not injured.
