JEFFERSON COUNTY - Thousands of metro-area residents will get phone calls on Wednesday as their local sheriff's office tests a new system to notify residents of an emergency. Jefferson and Broomfield counties are rolling out the system called Code Red.
JeffCo says it started looking for a new system prior to the Lower North Fork Fire in March 2012 - in which 100,000 addresses did not get emergency calls.
Ann Appel did not get one of those calls and ended up dying in the fire.
Code Red is being tested with its first all-call on Wednesday.
Jefferson and Broomfield counties residents are urged to sign up their home and mobile phones for the service using the Sheriff's website: http://bit.ly/XfGhZT.
