KUSA - Members of the transgender community and those who support them gathered for a special service on Sunday.

Nov. 20 is the International Transgender Day of Remembrance.

It's a time when the community comes together to remember those who were killed during the past year in incidents involving anti-transgender hatred or prejudice.

The annual gathering started about 18 years ago after young transgender woman was murdered in Boston based on her gender identity.

Organizers say 24 victims from around the world were honored Sunday.

'Its a voice," Shawn Turk with the Gender Identity Center of Colorado said. "It gives our allies and the general public awareness that this is an issue, that this is a serious issue."

The Gender Identity Center, which hosted Denver's event, says it also offers a safe place to everyone to come together without fear of being judged.
