Evergreen couple accused of starving child

EVERGREEN - An Evergreen couple has been charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury for an allegedly causing their 6-year-old daughter to suffer what arrest affidavits called "long-term malnutrition."

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has arrested Jason Matthew Barton, 40, and Katherine Clark Barton, 36.

According to affidavits in the case, the child was brought to a local hospital by her parents. On admission, her weight was 25 pounds, which would be appropriate for a normal 2-year-old. Medical experts reportedly believed that her low weight was consistent with an insufficient diet despite plentiful food in the family home.

The child is now in the custody of Jefferson County Human Services.

The couple posted bonds of $25,000 each.
