BELLVUE - A father, driving his pregnant wife to the hospital, crashed the family car and died before seeing his third child's birth.
Jill Schmucker, 35, was in the family's Nissan Pathfinder SUV, alongside her husband, Tony, and their two other children.
The family was heading to the hospital for Jill to give birth to their third child in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Jan. 13.
The Colorado State Patrol says Tony Schmucker had a medical episode while heading east on Lodge Pole Drive in Bellvue, near Larimer County Road 23, which caused him to veer off the road and crash down into an embankment.
CSP says the car then hit a boulder and a tree before rolling over.
According to the family's GoFundMe page, Tony's son Ryder was able to call 911 after both his parents were left unconscious in the crash.
Tony, 37, was rushed to Poudre Valley Hospital by an ambulance, but did not survive.
His wife was taken to the Medical Center of the Rockies by helicopter, where she had an emergency C-section to deliver her baby. She also suffered a broken back, the family's GoFundMe page said.
Tony is described as a 'dear friend and employee,' who was 'always smiling, and always in a good mood.'
The two kids in the backseat suffered minor injuries.
According to the GoFundMe page, Jill is expected to make a full recovery.
