Trail Ridge Rd open to bicyclists

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK - The conditions may be a little bit tricky, but Trail Ridge Road is now open to bicyclists.

The road which runs through Rocky Mountain National Park and connects Estes Park and Grand Lake closed for the season last November.

In April it opened to bicyclists and hikers with leashed pets.

It crests at 12,183 feet making it the highest paved road in any national park. Given the high altitude users should be prepared for strong winds and rapid weather changes especially in early spring.

Everyone is urged to call the Trail Ridge Road Status line at 970-586-1222 for the most up-to-date information about closures and conditions.

Trail Ridge Road is expected to be closed for all motorized vehicles until late May. That's when it will get plowed making it possible for vehicles to pass through.

If you want to get in an early season hike you should also be aware of changing conditions. You can find current trail conditions before you head out.

The National Park Service is offering free admission April 15, 16, 22 and 23 at Rocky Mountain National Park and every other national park, in honor of National Park Week.
