KUSA - Ahead of the busy impending holiday travel season, the Transportation Security Administration at Denver International Airport is alerting soon-to-be travelers about some security checkpoint changes to make the experience a smooth one.
Large electronics greater than the size of a cell phone will have to come out of your bag for screening, Colorado Federal Security Director Larry Nau said.
OK, so now that's out of the way, what about the items that are a bit more...meaningful (read: edible)?
“You are allowed to bring food items through checkpoint,” said Michele Cook, an officer with TSA said.
Even though they allow food, it may take some additional screening.
“One thing that people may not understand is Grandma Sally's fruit bread is an item that would show up on the x-ray that would require us to search the bag,” Nau said.
Just to be on the safe side, we asked about some of the other holiday favorites.
“A pumpkin pie, they are allowed to bring it to the checkpoint,” Cook said.
Mashed potatoes were also on the, “OK to fly list”, but some other dishes are questioned.
“A casserole uses a lot of cream of mushroom soup that can be considered a liquid so they would have to ask a supervisor,” Cook said.
She says because things like cranberry sauce is already ground down and put in a liquid form, you would not be able to bring it through the checkpoint unless it was placed in less than three ounces.
“Stuff like turkey or a lot of candy items may have to be checked,” Cook said.
Then there’s the question about those presents that Santa leaves for you.
“Can gifts come? Yes they can, but we strongly suggest you don't bring wrapped gifts,” Cook said
She says if those items are flagged while going through the checkpoint, they may have to open them.
“We really don't want to unwrap gifts and I'm sure you don't your gift unwrapped as well,” added Cook.
The federal security director for the state says a neatly packed bag also helps those officers move the line quickly.
TSA says the 311 rules for liquids still apply, but they do offer 24/7 assistance and if you have a question about a carry-on item you can tweet a picture to @askTSA.
This holiday season, TSA is expecting 68,000 to 70,000 people to travel on a daily basis. They're encouraging everyone to be at least two hours early for their flight.
