It's Indigenous Peoples' Day in Denver and Boulder

KUSA - Denver has joined a growing list of cities in honoring indigenous people on what was once Columbus Day.

Monday marks the first Indigenous Peoples’ Day since the Denver City Council unanimously passed a resolution permanently marking the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Boulder passed a similar resolution in August.

Denver has celebrated Columbus Day for more than a century, but not without controversy or protest.

Opponents say the holiday represents racism. Columbus Day proponents say it is a great source of pride for Italian-Americans throughout the country.

Denver is one of dozens of cities across the country that celebrates Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
