Lightning hits tree, leaves unusual pattern

DENVER - In a game of weather Rochambeau, lightning beats tree every time.

Lightning struck the West Washington Park tree sometime during Wednesday evening's thunderstorm. The lightning peeled a strip of bark off the tree like a lemon twist when it struck near South Corona Street and East Virginia Avenue.

An arborist said the lightning likely hit the top of the tree and spiraled down the trunk to the ground. Often in cases like this, the tree won't even have a burn scar.
