KUSA - A man from Littleton ran the 26 miles in Boston to honor the 26 who lost their lives in Newtown, Connecticut. It was one mile for each victim of the Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting, bridging the two tragedies through a personal connection.
Tim Dougherty's sister-in-law, Mary Sherlach, the Sandy Hook school counselor died trying to save the lives of the students.
"I think she would have been thrilled that I, anybody, would be running on her behalf. You know - to remember herself and the other 25 victims that day," Dougherty, 57, said.
At mile 22 Dougherty said he felt like he couldn't go on and asked Mary for help. He thinks she came through and got him across the finish line.
"She loved her job," Dougherty said. "She was there for 18 years and she was dedicated to those kids, and she was dedicated to her profession. She's gone but we still love her."
