Man breaks through windows to save storm victim

AURORA – It was a day of clean up Thursday in neighborhoods that took the brunt of Wednesday night's storms.

That is the case at the Green Acres Mobile Home Park in Aurora. A tree landed on top of a man's home near Interstate 225 and East Colfax Avenue. One person inside the trailer suffered minor injuries.

The man that helped the victim out of the crushed mobile home talked to 9NEWS

Andrew Carson's hand is broken and swollen. He does not regret anything about the night it happened.

"I saw a trailer split in half," Carson said.

Carson recieved a call about storm damage at the Aurora mobile home park where he is the maintenance man.

"I heard a man yelling for help," he said.

He says he knew he had to get in to help him.

"I've never heard anyone crying out for help like that before," he said.

Carson didn't have any tools with him. There was nothing to break in the windows and walls. He used his bare hands.

"I couldn't think about anything. I just had to get to him and save him," Carson said.

An enormous tree, estimated to be more than 40-feet tall had crashed on top of the trailer. The weight of the tree had caved in the back half of the home.

When Carson got to the man, he was pinned between a dresser and a nightstand.

"There is no way he could have gotten out of there," Carson said.

The storm victim is bruised and sore but is going to recover.

Carson's wife and five young daughters say they are proud of the way he responded.

"I'm just so proud of what he did," Carson's 7-year-old daughter said. "He didn't think about himself. He thought of someone else first."

Carson says he can't afford to miss any work. He will be back at the trailer park helping out with his broken hand first thing in the morning.

Still, he doesn't regret a thing.

"It feels really good to help someone out," he said. "That is more important than the way my hand feels."
