Colorado House Speaker on why she promoted Lebsock, despite allegations

NEXT WITH KYLE CLARK - The Aurora Sentinel has called for Colorado House Speaker Crisanta Duran to resign because of her decision to promote State Rep. Steve Lebsock, D-Thornton, to chairmanship last year, despite knowing about sexual harassment accusations against him.

When allegations made by State Rep. Faith Winter, D-Westminster, came to light on Friday, Duran removed Lebsock from his position as chairman of the Local Government Committee. Duran declined a request to speak on camera to 9NEWS on Monday. Tuesday, she released a statement  saying,

"When I named Rep. Lebsock to the chairmanship, I believed that the situation had been resolved to the satisfaction of Rep. Winter. I would not have appointed him chair knowing what I know today."

The Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault said journalists' criticism of Duran is "standing in the way of meaningful cultural change necessary to support survivors, hold offenders accountable, and create safer communities."

9NEWS asked The Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault if it supported Speaker Duran's decision to promote Lebsock into a position of power over his alleged victim's legislation.

The Coalition did not directly answer the question.

In a meeting with reporters on Tuesday, Rep. Lebsock said Speaker Duran had a conversation with him about expectations as a chair before he was appointed.

"I can recall her saying that talking about the level of professionalism, and I’ve done that," Lebsock said. "I’ve been professional. I’m really proud of the work that we’ve done in the local government committee since I’ve been chairman."
