She said her tattoos opened up conversations about her cancer, a topic that so many are afraid to touch. One of them was a ribbon with the word "love" written in the handwriting of her children and grandchildren.  

Karen passed away recently in March. She spent 10 of her 56 years fighting ovarian cancer and undergoing 139 chemo treatments.

Karen DeMello was a victim's advocate, a mediator, an advocate for suicide prevention, and a fighter.
