No ice bucket necessary for this ALS fundraiser

WINDSOR - While it seems everywhere you turn there's someone else doing the Ice Bucket Challenge, another fundraiser for ALS went on quietly Saturday for its 13th year in Windsor.

Kip and Michelle Sheets organized the annual Mark Sheets Memorial Tournament at Pelican Lakes in memory of Kip's brother, Mark, who died from ALS in 2001.

It's an intimate gathering capped at 28 teams. Kip says this year the money they raise for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of ALS will go to Wynn Vandenberg of Greeley. He's been battling Lou Gehrig's disease for about three years.

Some of the proceeds will also go to Mark Sheet's daughter and other organizations to honor Mark's wishes.

They say the timing of the Ice Bucket Challenge frenzy couldn't have come at a better time.

"We are grateful this Ice Bucket Challenge is catching on the way it has," Michelle said. "It has put a face on an otherwise not-known disease."
