Smoke visible from metro area from oil well fire

WATKINS - The plume of smoke from an oil well near Watkins was visible from the Denver metro area Tuesday morning.

The Bennett Fire chief says a small, over-pressure valve from an oil well blew off fewer than 100 gallons of oil and caught fire. The well is two miles south of Watkins on the 3100 block of South Ulm Street.

ConocoPhillips' safety systems contained the fire before any fire crews arrived.

Both Bennett and Sable Altura Fire Departments responded.

No one was injured.
