Snowboarder may have hit a tree before dying at Monarch Ski Area

KUSA - A snowboarder who died Saturday at Monarch Ski Area is believed to have collided with a tree, authorities say.

Chaffee County Sheriff's deputies were called to the ski area on a call of an unresponsive male snowboarder who might've hit a tree.

A witness told first responders Collin J. Zak, 23, was snowboarding and then hit a tree.

Monarch Ski patrol gave Zak CPR for some time, but he later died at the scene. According to the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office, Zak is an Ohio native who was currently serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Deputies say Zak was wearing a helmet when he hit the tree.
