Woman killed in I-70 crash was wife of well-known pastor

BUENA VISTA - A woman who was killed in a car accident near Copper Mountain Friday was the wife of a well-known pastor in Buena Vista.

Miranda Schumann, 26, died after the SUV she was in flipped and rolled over several times. Schumann was the wife of Pastor Charlie Stoumbaugh.

The couple had only been married for eight months, but the two were inseparable. Schumann is well known in his community. He was the pastor for the family who was killed in a massive rockslide last year.

Dealing with another tragedy has been difficult for the residents of Buena Vista. Schumann was just as well-known as her husband.

"Miranda was a true light," family friend Leslie Quilico said. "A smile on her face makes the whole room smile".

Quilico is also the family pastor at Cornerstone Church in Buena Vista, where Stoumbaugh also works.

"He loved that woman with all his heart. He's heartbroken. He's Charlie. People who know Charlie know how strong he is. But he lost his wife," Quilico added.

Their life together was a trip, which explained why they loved every little adventure together.

"They loved to play together. They loved to travel together. Miranda was very passionate about traveling," Quilico said.

They both had looked forward to their trip on Friday; a family adventure to Yellowstone National Park. But the trip ended before they could even leave Colorado.

"We trust that God is good, but we mourn right now," Quilico said.

For a family and community so devoted to their faith, it makes some in their community wonder: How could this sort of thing happen?

"That's a question that we've all answered for people a thousand times, and I think the answer for us right now is we don't know," Quilico added.
