"I walked into the [hospital] room and my mom said to Laurie, 'Hey, Katie is here.' And [Laurie] grabbed my arm. She knew me and she grabbed my arm, and I knew the worst was over," she said.
"It's unbelievable, her strength. You can see it in her eyes. She's amazing," Katie Gorham said.
Laurie Gorham remained in a hospital room at Denver Health Medical Center on Wednesday. The hospital says she's in fair condition. It's a sign of real progress, says her family, especially considering how close to death she was just a few days ago.
Who ran over the aspiring pediatrician last Thursday night at East 29th Avenue and Central Park Boulevard in Stapleton remains a mystery. Laurie Gorham, 27, was 34 weeks pregnant. Doctors tried to save her baby but were unsuccessful.
"[Laurie] doesn't remember much about the vehicle," her father Mark Gorham said. "She doesn't know if it [the driver] was a male or a female."
Denver Police say they're looking for a dark-colored SUV. It's unclear if they're making progress in the investigation.
"We're not sure what thoughts went through a person's head when they did this," Mark Gorham said. "But we need to get this person off the streets."
Katie and Mark Gorham came to 9NEWS on Wednesday to deliver two messages: First, they want people to know that Laurie is definitely doing better.
"I just saw her this morning. She's sitting up. She actually texted me at 6 a.m. to make her some bacon," Mark Gorham said with a smile.
Second, the family wants to thank the number of people who have helped them over the past few days.
"The people who found her on the street, the EMTs, the ambulance driver and the police that helped her get to this point. They really helped save her life because she was that close," Mark Gorham said.
He also wants to thank the staff at Denver Health Medical Center.
"Laurie used a lot of blood, so if people could help them replace that it would be great," Mark Gorham said.
He says he hopes his daughter can leave the hospital sometime before Christmas.
