Denver Police say two officers on bicycles were pedaling west through a crosswalk at the corner of Lafayette Street and Colfax Avenue just before 9 a.m. when the crash happened.

Police say the driver of a pickup was heading north on Lafayette Street and turned right at Colfax Avenue, hitting one of the police officers.

The officer suffered a minor leg injury and was taken via ambulance to a local hospital.

"The officer suffered an injury to his knee," Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. "Basically, it's twisted a little bit, looks to be sprained, not too serious."

Police say the driver of the truck was cited for careless driving.

"The driver did stop, which is the right thing to do," Jackson said.

Jackson says bicycle units are common in the area and allow police to have better community involvement with the officers being more personable and accessible. He says they are also able to maneuver through the area better sometimes on bikes than in cars.

No names were released in the incident.
