Both were looking to move out of their current homes, get one together and live happily ever after.
But last week, Arapahoe County Sheriff's Deputies arrested Liggett's son Ari. He was driving his mother's car at the time. Deputies found the dismembered remains of his 56-year-old mother in the back seat.
"It's just tragic, it's just tragic," Masia said. "We were planning to grow old together. We were going to have a good life. She deserved a good life."
Liggett's 24-year-old son Ari is in the Arapahoe County Jail, charged with killing his own mother.
Court documents revealed that in 2010 Beverly told police she was afraid of her son.
Last week Ari told investigators that he had found his mother dead, put her in the freezer and found poison at the home. He didn't explain how Beverly ended up dismembered.
9NEWS learned that Beverly recently removed Ari from her will.
Masia said the couple met on JDate.com five years ago. Beverly's friend said the two have been together ever since.
"We were so happy together," Masia said. "She made me laugh. I made her laugh."
Beverly recently graduated from nursing school with honors and worked with handicapped kids.
"Her patients loved her," he said. "Her employers loved her. She loved her patients."
Masia and Ari's father both told 9NEWS the man suffered from mental illness.
"I saw that Beverly was trapped in this situation, the resources didn't exist to extricate her, one way or another it was not going to have a happy ending," Masia said.
Masia said Beverly's options for Ari were either jail or home. Beverly chose home.
"Because he'd never hurt anybody and because he'd never uttered physical threats to anybody, I thought he was going to get a hold of a car again and have a horrible accidents or be fooling around with chemicals and burn something up or just have an accident and be gravely hurt and wind up in a hospital and maybe back in jail that way," Seth said. "I didn't really seriously consider that he was going to poison his mother and the cat."
According to the documents obtained by 9NEWS, investigators found the cat dead under a bed in the home. Masia said the cat was Ari's best friend.
"I just can't imagine what kind of delusional state of mind he was in when he did this," Masia said.
Masia told 9NEWS Crime and Justice Reporter Anastasiya Bolton he last talked to Beverly Sunday after she was done with work.
Masia said Ari texted him that morning asking if he was coming over, but Masia wasn't planning on it because he had a lot of writing to do.
"I do believe he poisoned her around 8 or 8:30 p.m. that night," Masia said. "he had it all figured out what he was going to do with the body."
Masia is not sure what's next. He said he had a lot of decisions to make. He hopes Masia
He said he talked to 9NEWS so Beverly could be remembered the right way.
"She deserves to be remembered with love and admiration and she will be," he said. "She deserved a lot better, she deserved a long and happy life."
