Derek St. Holmes plays Guitar Hero
Derek St. Holmes, a former vocalist and guitarist for Ted Nugent, judged a competition among young musicians in Lakewood and Wheat Ridge.
Youth ages 7 to 17 got to perform solos and get tips from the pro. The winner of the competition received $100 and a week at camp.
"We thought for most of the young kids, to get them interested in Camp Jam, we thought we'd start promoting this contest," said St. Holmes.
St. Holmes started touring the U.S. four years ago to get kids involved with music.
In addition to playing live music, the young artists also get to show off their skills in the virtual world, competing for the best score on the popular video game Guitar Hero.
"I don't have that down," laughed St. Holmes. "The kids get a kick out of me," he said of playing the game.
Second grader David Brakel won the solo competition on Saturday on the drums. Winners from across the nation will attend Camp Jam this summer.
