USA TODAY - The best restaurant in the world is Eleven Madison Park, a New York City spot famous for serving up multi-course meals in its upscale location on Madison Avenue.
The restaurant took home the honor Wednesday at a ceremony in Melbourne, Australia, where co-owner Will Guidara called it, "the greatest affirmation of all."
The restaurant overlooks the city's Madison Park and specializes in 8-10 course seasonal tasting menus going for $295 per person. The 50 Best Restaurants Academy, which annually publishes the list, described the restaurant's style as "a New York twist on modern European." You can throw on the bar-tasting menu for $145.
The honey lavender roasted duck, the academy notes, is the restaurant's signature dish. There's also co-owner and chef Daniel Humm's celery root cooked in a pig's bladder, something he considers "a career-defining creation," the academy noted.
Guidara and Humm, "enhance the fine-dining experience with a sense of fun, blurring the line between the kitchen and the dining room," the academy said, adding, "the restaurant's multi-course seasonal tasting menu celebrates the city's rich history and culinary traditions."
It's the first time Eleven Madison Park has topped the list. In its debut, the restaurant held the No. 50 position and has maintained a spot in the top 10 since 2012. At No. 1, it replaces Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, which fell to No. 2.
The restaurants on the list come from 22 countries. The United States had six on the list along with France and Spain.
