Trevor Siemian threw zingers back at Peyton Manning as a rookie

USA TODAY - Trevor Siemian has come a long way since 2015.

Siemian was selected by the Broncos in the seventh round of the draft that year and entered training camp as the No. 4 quarterbackbehind Peyton Manning, Brock Osweiler and Zac Dysert.

Many rookie quarterbacks would have been intimidated in a quarterback room that included Manning, a future Hall of Famer. But Siemian was — as he is now on the field — calm and composed.

In a feature on Siemian written by Robert Klemko of Sports Illustrated, former Broncos quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp shared a great anecdote from the quarterback’s first season in the NFL.

“Peyton threw a zinger at Trevor, and it was incredible to hear how Trevor spit one back in Peyton’s face,” Knapp told Klemko. “And I’m going, ‘I love this. Mr. Manning, you’ve got a little bit of a challenge with this rookie.’ Trevor doesn’t get intimidated easily.”

Siemian went on to beat out Dysert for the No. 3 job and spent most of his rookie season on the inactives list (he dressed for one game in 2015). The next summer, Manning retired and Osweiler signed with the Texans, opening the door for Siemian to beat out veteran Mark Sanchez and then-rookie Paxton Lynch for the starting job.

From the bottom of the depth chart to Denver’s starting quarterback, Siemian has made quite the ascension. Siemian has been poised from the beginning, so perhaps fans should have seen his rise coming. Siemian is who he’s always been — a gamer, not afraid to stand up to the likes of Manning in meetings or defenders on game days.
