The lights in the night sky reappear
|
LONGMONT - It was a mystery that left people across Denver with the same question Monday night: what caused those strange fireballs in the sky? The colors reappeared over Longmont Tuesday night. ![]() They didn't belong to a meteorite, a UFO, or anything else - it was only members of the Mile-Hi Skydiving Center. Monday evening, thousands of people saw their pyrotechnic act at the Broncos game. Those who weren't in attendance didn't know the sparks were shooting off of the skydivers. "Other than the people in the stadium where it was announced, anybody outside the stadium probably had no idea what it was...and it does look like a meteorite or something falling from the sky," Frank Casares, owner of the skydiving center, said. 9NEWS was bombarded by phone calls and e-mails on Monday, asking what the lights were. The Mile-Hi Skydiving Center has a contract with the Broncos. That's why it performed Monday night. As for Tuesday's light show over Longmont, 9NEWS was curious to see what they did, so we asked them to give us a sneak peak. When they jump out of a plane, they light pyrotechnics immediately off of their gear and it streams down after them in the night sky. The light show usually lasts a couple of minutes. There are usually about six of them that jump at a time. They usually stay in formation for the first part of the jump, so the lights are packed together. When they break formation, the lights spread apart. On Tuesday night, they jumped from about 13,000 feet. The Mile-Hi Skydiving Center forgot to notify Longmont Police about Tuesday evening's jump, so a few officers showed up. The skydiving team was not cited. (Copyright KUSA*TV, All Rights Reserved)
