Whisper app use surging in Iraq

KUSA - Social media is giving Iraqis a voice they didn't have during the Iraq War.

Some there are turning to new apps to tell the world how terrible things have become in a country with no free press.

The popular app called "Whisper" lets users post their thoughts anonymously.

CNN says it found messages from Iraqis worrying about their fate if ISIS takes Baghdad.

"It's really the people taking over, in some way, the dissemination of information that could be probably hidden by the leaders [and] by governments," said Metropolitan State University political science professor Robert Hazan.

Iraqis typically access to the more widely used social media sites we are all familiar with, like Facebook and Twitter, but those platforms say they had to investigate reports of service disruptions this weekend.
